Ozempic - The active substance of the preparation is semaglutide, a peptide produced by genetic engineering in yeast cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using recombinant DNA technology. The amino acid sequence of semaglutide is very similar to the amino acid sequence of one of the endogenous incretin hormones, i.e. glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Incretin hormones are peptide molecules produced by cells of the small intestine in response to glucose. GLP-1 has a multifaceted effect. It increases postprandial insulin secretion by beta cells of the pancreas and regulates glucagon secretion, which improves glycemia control by reducing fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels. GLP-1 is also a physiological regulator of appetite and cardiovascular function.

Semaglutide binds to the GLP-1 receptor and activates it. Its effect is analogous to the effects of GLP-1. Semaglutide, like GLP-1, increases insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner. When blood glucose levels are high, insulin secretion is stimulated, and when glucose levels decrease, insulin secretion is inhibited. Glucagon secretion is also regulated. Semaglutide does not interfere with the normal glucagon response to hypoglycemia. Semaglutide also delays gastric emptying and may thus reduce the rate and speed of glucose absorption. Semaglutide is used to improve glycemic control by reducing fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes (previously the term "non-insulin-dependent diabetes" was used).

Semaglutide also affects the control of food intake and the feeling of appetite. By specifically activating the GLP-1 receptor in the areas of the brain responsible for regulating appetite, it increases the feeling of satiety and reduces the feeling of hunger. It limits the need to consume food, which consequently causes a reduction in body weight.

Dosage of Ozempic - solution for injection

The preparation is a solution for injection (solution in a pen); it is intended for subcutaneous administration. Do not exceed the recommended doses, because this will not increase the effectiveness of the drug and may harm your health and life. If you have any doubts about the use of the preparation, consult a doctor.

Adults: initially 0.25 mg once a week; after 4 weeks, the doctor will recommend increasing the dose to 0.5 mg once a week, and after another 4 weeks to 1 mg once a week; if necessary, after another 4 weeks, the doctor may recommend increasing the dose to 2 mg once a week. Do not use doses higher than 2 mg per week.
